SkillBuilder.io: Sales Support and Marketing Specialist
What is SkillBuilder.io? - 3 min explainer video. We help companies deploy AI Inbound salespeople within 10 minutes to capture leads from their website or social channels with a conversational experience.
What does that look like? Try it out for yourself:
This is Garry (a play on Garrett County Maryland where Garry ‘works’), who is employed by DeepCreekTimes.com. You can chat with Garry.
What should You ask Garry? Whatever you want but Garry’s unique goals are to help you find out more about the Deep Creek area - some example questions:
Where can I eat in Deep Creek with a family?
What kinds of activities can I do with my kids in Deep Creek?
What is WISP resort?
etc.
This is Gilly, they (the AI) work for The Forbes Funds and try to help people explore GPNP - some example questions:
What is GPNP?
Do you offer grants to regional social impact organizations?
Do you offer grants?
How can I schedule a meeting with the Executive Director?
etc.
Ok, Fired up? A little more than Curious? We are kicking off a big adventure and you could be at the ground floor. We’re looking for a Jack/Jane/They of all trades and master of a few.
So, what’s your title? Probably “Sales Support and Marketing Specialist" but we aren’t in love with that so we can talk about how it should evolve depending upon outcomes.
What will you be doing at a high level? A few things at a glance:
Capture the attention of prospects with social media storytelling on LinkedIn, Instagram & our website (other ideas welcome but that’s where we would start) - this probably means you are A+ at CANVA or better, willing to work in Webflow, and not afraid to use major AI platforms (dealer’s choice: Claude, Poe, etc) without losing a unique voice that resonates
You WANT to get involved in the demand generation & sales process. That means customer research (maybe using Perplexity.ai et al), building sales presentations (in Google slides), and making sure the before, during, and after of a meeting is seamless. That means working in a CRM and managing up to the founders on how to keep the machine moving
Community management. We are lucky to have a lot of early customers who are co-creating with us a world-class AI experience that they love and use daily. But, we release features often multiple times a week and need to communicate what’s happening and how to take advantage of these tools. This means training, support, and explainer videos. Tools like loom, Pendo, and campfire are your BFFs.
What types of things are bonus pts if you know how to use them:
Advanced design: FIGMA/Adobe
Analytics (Google)
Ads (Google, LI, etc)
SEO in all it’s ever-changing forms
What are we going to look for at a glance?
Experience: 1-4 years in a customer success, design, or related role within a technology company, agency, marketing, or startup background - someplace you can demonstrate that you are an amazing storyteller and community builder.
Entrepreneurial Mindset: You are a doer. If you have not started a business (lemonade stands count) it’s probably not for you. We are a HIGH agency (a favorite way we think about this “[you] either find a way, or [you] make a way.” group who works remotely with regular get togethers but you need to be okay if you can’t get more than slack messages for a day or two at this stage.
You like to have a plan that is flexible. Show us that you are organized (you send questions in advance to the interview), show us that you can follow up, and show us that you don’t work real-time when it’s not necessary.
Agility and Adaptability: So, you worked for 3 hours on a plan and things change? That happens in startupland. Sometimes we need things now and if you wouldn’t want to pause and shift this is probably the wrong stage of business for you.
Problem-Solving Skills: We value outcomes, not effort. That’s harsh but a harsh reality of early-stage, venture backed businesses. If you need lots of validation in terms of congratulating you that you did your job, this culture is likely not the first stop. We reward excellence and believe in a meritocracy (the best idea wins regardless of source) but your reward (beyond compensation) is working on world-changing ideas and technology and being that kind of change maker. There are lots of places that plan lots of happy hours and have ping pong tables, this isn’t one of them.
Customer First: People say this but it often goes to the wayside because people can’t normally respond to customers as fast as we can. We can typically resolve issues within hours to days and new features are days to weeks. You need to be a fierce advocate for the community you represent because everyone else will be competing for resources.
Collaboration, Communication, and Confidence: Excellent verbal and written communication skills and willing to do whatever is professionally necessary to make a client experience amazing. That means doing research, writing agendas, taking notes, etc. If you are on the team and there is a job to do, no job is too small if it’s a big impact to a client.
Get up and Go! Are you the type that can manage up well? You’ll do great here. Are you the type that needs to have someone constantly add to your to do list? You’ll hate it here.
Lived Experience: We value degrees, certifications, etc but what we really value is your ability to DEMONSTRATE you can do this job. We want portfolios, work product, and public shows of your being all the things mentioned above from tools to culture. Don’t be afraid to apply, even if you didn’t go to some fancy school or spend 5 years doing this, it’s an hourly job to start and that means we need people with potential and not just people who want to mail it in inside of corporate America. If you stand out, apply. If you can SHOW us that you can do it, apply. Apply.
What’s in it for you?
Cold hard cash: $20-$40/hour based on demonstrated experience (not years of experience) + an option after 60 days for commission based on leads, and possibly more
Work that matters: It’s easy to see the buzzy AI words flying all around but this is as concrete and bleeding-edge as it gets. You’ll see the future getting distributed here and we can serve a variety of audiences from SMBs to Enterprise, so you won’t get bored.
Growth: We’ll upskill you at speeds you never thought possible but you have to be in that mindset (growth) and not a right or wrong headspace. We are in the move fast and break stuff phase.
Culture: We are serious people who collectively have helped to exit 10+ companies and invested in dozens more. This is a business you come to work to move to the next level not fill out your portfolio. We are there for you but come ready to rock and roll and be a leader on the team.
After the first 3 months: Lots of “choose your own adventure” moments. If you are loving what you are doing and the business sees it the same way we have lots of paths to explore together (growing more senior, moving into sales or product, etc)
A chance to see a company at inception grow, fast!
What will the interview process look like? We try to make decisions within 3 weeks (max) from when we start this process, but we are also ready to hire as soon as we find someone since this is a contract role to start (minimum 20 hours a week).
Step 1: Apply by emailing us highlights about your fit for the job, why you’re excited about the role, and a quick orientation about why this is the right next step in your career, including your LinkedIn profile / CV / Resume or a 5 min video on why it makes sense for us to talk to hello (@) skillbuilder.io
Step 2: If we decide to move forward, You’ll receive a calendly link to schedule a 25 min demo/chat with Adam (CEO).
What’s happening in this interview?
We get to know your personality and vice versa
You look at the tool and see if you are screaming that you get it or you are meh on it (no shade)
You’ll have 3-5 ideas, maybe on the spot or thought of in advance, of how you would tell a story about the tool
You’ll talk about your ability to design and market, be organized, and be a DRIVING force to move the business FORWARD
We’ll talk specifically about your reward system and compensation needs
We’ll most importantly try and field any questions you have
If you are advanced in this process, you’ll be asked to complete a 1-hour PAID (at the rate we agree) assignment. It will be to create a piece of content that we will ideally use and the next step won’t take place until you have completed the paid task. Doesn’t feel like this is for you? No problem but the work is what we want to see and happy to pay for it.
Step 3: You’ll receive a calendly link for a 25-minute chat with Kit.
You'll exchange backgrounds, but mostly hear our sales pitch and talk about real client needs. Key areas you want to explore:
How is the professional chemistry/sales motion/needs of Kit fit with your skills and culture interests
Are you up for the pace of startup and the outcomes over effort mindset
A detailed way of how you’ll manage up AND be able to keep going even if Kit is unavailable in one of the 25+ (on average) demos he is giving every week
How you would typically plan/run sprints in calendar form so that everyone could stay up to date/support you
If you are advanced in the process, you’ll be asked to complete a 2-hour (always PAID) assignment. 1 hour to create a calendar overview of how you would tell stories/campaigns about SkillBuilder.io AND pick 1-2 features from the actual tool and create a loom video that a customer would find helpful, inspiring, and differentiated. Then, for the second paid hour, present your work to at least ⅔ of the founders.
Step 4: We extend an offer that will have a max start date of 2 weeks from the time we agree on hours, compensation, schedule, etc. We’ll have a simple contractor agreement to start, but we all hope it grows from there.
Thanks and we hope to see you at the interview!
P.S. No, we don’t need a recruiter or a contact list so if this is you and you EVER want to work with us please don’t email. We’ll build a voodoo doll of you and that will be that.
